Manchester United are continuing their pursuit of Viktor Gyokeres as the dramatic fallout between the striker and Sporting CP has almost guaranteed his departure from Portugal this summer.

It all began last year when Gyokeres renewed his contract, including a gentleman’s agreement that if he wished to depart the club, his potential suitors would not need to pay his £85 million (€100 million) release clause.

Instead, Gyokeres was of the understanding that a bid of £58 million would be enough to agree his transfer from Sporting. However, the Portuguese side have been demanding a fee of £67 million, seemingly breaching the agreement.

Reportedly “furious” with the club, Gyokeres has removed Sporting from his Instagram bio, only adding to the growing feud between the two parties.

In response to this, Sporting’s president Frederico Varandas cut his holiday short to return and respond to the issues, announcing that no set fee had been agreed in the gentleman’s agreement, only that his full release clause would not be required.

It’s now been revealed by A Bolla, that included in the contract is a clause which would demand the club to pay Gyokeres’ agent Hasan Çetinkaya 10% of the transfer fee if a proposal of over £51 million (€60 million) is rejected.

It’s understood that this clause is optional and could well be the “blackmail” which Varandas referred to in his statement about the situation.

However, it’s now been revealed that if Çetinkaya chooses to activate the clause, Sporting would respond by demanding his full release clause to be met by any potential new club.

It’s understood that Sporting are currently wanting around £60 million for their star striker, however this could shoot up based on Gyokeres’ agents’ actions.
