Manchester United and England legend David Beckham has finally been awarded a knighthood, officially now becoming Sir David Beckham.
The 50-year-old was honoured in the King’s Birthday Honours list, with The Daily Mail reporting him declaring himself as “immensely proud” to have been awarded the UK’s highest honour for his services to sport and to charity.
Speaking about the occasion, Beckham commented: “Growing up in East London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour.
“To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true.”
Beckham added that his charity work gives him real “fulfilment”, going on to say: “It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I’m immensely proud and it’s such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.”
Sir David Beckham shared the occasion with his wife and Spice Girl Victoria, who now becomes Lady Backham, an official upgrade from her Posh Spice days.
It’s been reported that Beckham was set for the honour 11 years ago in 2014, however he missed out due to a “red flag” from the tax man.
At the time, leaked emails suggested that Beckham labelled the nominations committee as “unappreciative c***s”, branding their decision to leave him from the honours list as “a disgrace, to be honest”, however later claimed these emails were fraudulent and created by a hacker.
Now though, Sir David Beckham has been handed the honour alongside actor Gary Oldman, Roger Daltrey from The Who, with musical theatre star Elaine Paige, pottery designer Emma Bridgewater, and novelist Pat Barker being given Damehoods.
An MBE was handed to Darts star and Manchester United fan Luke Littler and Luke Humphries, along with Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman.
