No one argued against the logic when the Washington Commanders traded for Deebo Samuel. After all, the team needed a star receiver to pair with All-Pro Terry McLaurin.
No one argued when the team retained Noah Brown this offseason. Brown is a "pro's pro'' and was a quality receiving option for quarterback Jayden Daniels despite missing the later part of the season due to a serious injury.
Training camp hasn't even begun, though, and Washington's plans for their receivers room have taken a serious hit.
And we have to say it: Despite their attempts to fix it, the front office is ultimately responsible - at least for the situation involving the No. 1 guy.
Issues first arose when McLaurin was a no-show during mandatory minicamp. The All-Pro receiver wants a new deal - surely over $30 million per year - and has proven he will sit out of practice to make that point known.
During the middle of minicamp, Brown suffered an injury that the organization kept tight-lipped about. No one knows how serious it is, but there are conflicting reports out there regarding whether contact was made.
To add further concern, Samuel has gone viral for looking overweight during warmups throughout the last week.
Oh, and Michael Gallup, the Dallas Cowboys, is dinged up.
To summarize, the Commanders have a top receiver who refuses to show up until he gets a new deal, another star who looks overweight, a critical role piece who suffered an injury and a comeback guy who might not be healthy enough to come back.
It's not the best news for a team with championship aspirations like the Commanders.
There is still plenty of time for Washington to get its receiving room in gear. It's a safe bet that they will be able to find a long-term agreement with McLaurin, get Samuel in shape, and have good news on Brown.
Until that happens, though, Washington's receiving room has become a significant concern going into camp. And it won't be easy for the front office to fix.
