Man United are looking to sign a striker this summer as they aim to rebuild their squad under Ruben Amorim.
Ruben Amorim’s task at Man United is as tough as any manager in England right now. The Portuguese manager has a huge transfer window ahead of him, where he will aim to bring in the best possible players to give United a chance to improve upon last season’s disaster.
One position that the manager wants to improve is the striker spot, as United were one of the lowest-scoring teams in the Premier League last season. Both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggled for form, and so United are keen to add more goals this summer.
Man United should sign Viktor Gyokeres
Viktor Gyokeres is the striker who has been linked to Man United for what feels the longest amount of time now. Seeing as he played under Amorim at Sporting CP, it was a natural link between the Swedish attacker and a move to Old Trafford.
But, is Gyokeres the best choice out of all the strikers that Man United have been linked to? He scored 54 goals in 52 games last season, compare that to the others; Osimhen scored 37 in 41 games, Ekitike scored 22 in 48 games and Sesko netted 21 in 45 games. So, based on last season’s statistics, Gyokeres is the better choice. Add that to his links with Amorim, and it seems a no-brainer.
Furthermore, Gyokeres is more of a traditional number nine, he’s tall, strong, and his positioning is second to none. Imagine how many goals he could score getting service from the likes of Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes behind him. Not to mention if United are able to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford too.
How do the strikers compare cost-wise?
Many will be put off by the fact that Gyokeres has an £85m release clause in his contract at Sporting CP, however, it has been reported that he wants to leave this summer, and that the club are resigned to selling him. If that is the case, Sporting could accept a lower offer for his services.
Plus, Frankfurt are reportedly demanding over £80m for Ekitike, Sesko is likely to cost around £70m, and Osimhen has a £63m release clause. That makes Gyokeres likely to be the most expensive, but seeing as all four strikers are costing over £60m, Man United may as well try to make the move for the most prolific as it will be a hefty price whoever they choose.
The biggest concern with Gyokeres is that he is yet to play in one of Europe’s ‘top five’ leagues, with many believing that he isn’t yet proven in the top divisions. However, he does have extensive experience playing in England, as he has had spells at Brighton, Swansea, and most famously Coventry City.
Gyokeres nearly helped the Midlands-based side earn promotion to the Premier League by scoring 21 goals and providing 10 assists in the 2022/23 Championship season, before he moved to Sporting in the summer. There is no doubt that he’s capable of playing in the Premier League, and United should bite the bullet and make a bid for Amorim’s former target man.
