We look ahead to the opening match in Group B at the 2025 Club World Cup with our our PSG vs Atlético Madrid prediction and preview.
PSG vs Atlético Madrid Stats: The Key Insights
Paris Saint-Germain are favourites to kick off their Club World Cup campaign with a victory, assigned a 54.0% of beating Atlético Madrid by the Opta supercomputer.
PSG are also favourites to win the Club World Cup overall (18.5%).
Atlético Madrid won the previous only meeting between these two sides late last year, beating PSG 2-1 at the Parc des Princes in the Champions League.
When Paris Saint-Germain face Atlético Madrid in Pasadena on 15 June, it will mark the first time two European teams have met in the FIFA Club World Cup. Both sides are making their debut in the competition, having never qualified under the previous format.
PSG come into the Club World Cup following one of the most successful campaigns in their history. Luis Enrique’s side completed a historic treble, winning Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the UEFA Champions League, becoming the ninth different European side to achieve that feat. They are also the first French side to do so.
The high point of their season came in a stunning 5-0 dismantling of Inter in the Champions League final, as PSG became only the second French team to win the competition after Marseille’s success in 1993.
Under Luis Enrique, the Parisians have moved away from a top-heavy lineup of superstars to a more balanced and cohesive team, with quality distributed across the pitch. The results have been emphatic. His free-scoring side have scored 152 goals in 58 matches this season; only Barcelona (174 goals in 60 matches) have managed more among clubs from Europe’s top five leagues.
They’ll be confident of adding another trophy to their cabinet, too. According to the Opta supercomputer, PSG are favourites to win the Club World Cup at 18.5%. Luis Enrique knows what it takes to lift this trophy too, having previously won the tournament with Barcelona in 2015, albeit under the old format.
Club World Cup Predictions
Atlético Madrid, meanwhile, qualified as the sixth-highest-ranked eligible team in UEFA’s four-year ranking. However, they enter the tournament without a trophy since winning La Liga in 2020-21.
There were stretches of the 2024-25 season in which Atlético looked as formidable as ever under Diego Simeone, most notably during a club-record 15-game winning run between October and January. They were top of La Liga at the turn of the year, but a poor run of form that saw them win just once from five league games between mid-January and mid-February derailed their title push.
In Europe, they were unlucky to exit the Champions League against rivals Real Madrid. A controversial, now-amended rule saw Julián Alvarez’s penalty disallowed for a double touch in the decisive penalty shootout. They were later knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Barcelona in a chaotic semi-final tie, losing 5-4 on aggregate.
These two sides have only met once before: clashing in the Champions League group stage last year. Atlético Madrid won 2-1 at the Parc des Princes on that occasion.
Atlético Madrid Zones of Control vs PSG - Champions League
It was a classic case of attack versus defence in that game, with Atlético winning despite having just 29.0% possession. That’s the only time in recorded Champions League history that they’ve won while seeing less than 30% of the ball.
Ángel Correa was the hero that night, the Argentine netting a last-minute winner with just Atléti’s fourth shot of the game.
