Man Utd still have a lot of work to do this summer but it looks like they have made Victor Osimhen a priority.

Man Utd don’t just have a few holes to patch up in their squad, they have serious work that needs to be done to the foundations of the club and every area of the starting XI.

A lack of goals, a lack of control and a lack of consistency from those trusted to make a difference has been a real problem for Ruben Amorim and he could do with an experienced campaigner to set the standards for any potential new signings and the younger members of the squad with lofty aspirations.

What United need is someone who can play through the middle and who the Red Devils’ boss knows can chip in with goals and assists at a decent rate, the sort of ratio that makes the difference when competing at the top of the table.

United also have to buy the sort of players who their competitors are after and they have the opportunity to strengthen their own starting XI whilst dealing a blow to one at the same time.

Like United, Liverpool are in need of a new No.9 with Victor Osimhen linked with a move to Old Trafford and Anfield, however, it looks like the red half of Manchester have stolen a march in the chase for the Nigerian international’s signature, according to Footmercato: “For a long time, it was believed that Victor Osimhen would succumb to the lure of Saudi Arabia and its dollars. Despite a fantastic offer from Al-Hilal, the Nigerian international striker failed to reach an agreement with the Saudi club,” claimed the report.

“The former LOSC striker is now looking for a new club, with a return to Napoli appearing highly unlikely. While Galatasaray still hopes to keep him, Victor Osimhen has resumed talks with Manchester United, who are still searching for a No.9 and have not given up on the possibility of Viktor Gyökeres.

“As a reminder, the Super Eagle had discussions with Manchester United in early May regarding the terms of a possible move to Old Trafford. According to our information, discussions have recently resumed under the terms discussed a few weeks ago, namely a salary of €12 million (£10.2m) for the player and compensation of €75 million (£64m), including bonuses, for Napoli, the club that owns the player.”

Who should Man Utd sign: Victor Osimhen or Viktor Gyokeres?

It is a similar sort of fee to the one being demanded by Sporting Lisbon for Viktor Gyokeres after the Sweden international scored 39 goals in 33 league games this season.

Gyokeres has been more prolific than Osimhen in recent seasons, but 37 goals in 41 games in Turkey is, at least, a comparable return.

There is one major difference though, Osimhen has a track record of scoring goals in a top five league and of leading his team to a league title with Napoli in Serie A.

It is a small difference, but it is worth noting given the increased depth of quality in terms of teams in Serie A compared to Portugal.

Napoli also seem easier to deal with given that they want to sell Osimhen as soon as possible whereas Sporting are looking to push Gyokeres’ fee up as high as possible.

There isn’t much between the two so it might come down to what deal can be done quicker to allow Ruben Amorim to move onto his next target as soon as possible in what could be a busy summer.
