Edwin van der Sar makes prediction over Andre Onana's future at Man Utd, Ineos will hope he's right

Manchester United have been linked with several new goalkeepers this summer to replace Andre Onana.

After a season that was packed with errors from the shot stopper, talk of his possible replacement was always going to be rife this summer.

Manchester United have therefore had numerous goalkeepers linked, with Andre Onana having suitors in Saudi Arabia this summer.

One link has seen United reportedly ask about Gianluigi Donnarumma, with the PSG goalkeeper’s new contract talks stalling over the past few months.

Meanwhile, United have also shown interest in Senne Lammens, with the Belgian providing a more affordable option for the Red Devils to replace the struggling Onana.

It is not guaranteed that Onana leaves the club; however, now Edwin van der Sar has shared his stance on the 29-year-old.

Edwin van der Sar backs Andre Onana to improve next season for Manchester United

Speaking with talkSPORT, former United number one, Van der Sar, has spoken out on Onana’s future, issuing a defence to the Cameroon international.

“I’ve known him already for a long time,” the Champions League winner explained. “He spent four or five years at Ajax. I trained with him and saw him coming.

“He has great strengths. He’s athletic. He has good reaction saves. Good with his feet and everything. I’m sure he’s going to get over it.

“Sometimes it’s not easy. Sometimes your performances or the pressure there is. But I’ve seen him play for Ajax, for Inter, Champions League finals. I’m sure he’s going to be fine for next season.”

Continuing, Van der Sar explained that he thinks United have far greater problems than Onana this summer.

“I think there are more areas where United should see if they can have a better player, a different player.

“But I don’t think the goalkeeping situation needs to be addressed now. He’s not been consistent in his performances this year. But with the qualities that he has, he should be able to play for Man United for next season.”

Ineos needs to prioritise a goalkeeper this summer

While replacing Onana doesn’t come as a priority this summer, signing a new shot stopper to compete with the former Inter Milan star should be imperative for Ineos.

Amorim wants a new goalkeeper, but this will only come following the attack and midfield, which are taking priority for the transfer team at United this summer. There has been some talk that United will back Onana to improve for next season.

However, with Altay Bayindir expected to be sold, United must sign a new goalkeeper who can push Onana and compete for the starting role. Lammens would fit this bill, as would United-linked Zion Suzuki and also James Trafford from Burnley.

It is key that United have the option to replace Onana with the new signing, and so it should be a young high high-potential option, which luckily is exactly what Ineos are excelling at.
