Middlesbrough: Morgan Rogers sell-on clause details amid big Chelsea transfer rumours

Middlesbrough have seen some real starts make names for themselves on Teesside over the years. Boro have some big players on the books who could go for big fees in the future too.

Hayden Hackney is perhaps the biggest asset at the Riverside Stadium as it stands, emerging as one of the best English midfielders outside the Premier League since breaking through the academy.

Finn Azaz and Rav van den Berg are touted to command sizeable fees in the years to come as well.

One man sold by Middlesbrough in 2024 was Morgan Rogers. Just six months after signing from Manchester City, Aston Villa paid an initial £8m rising to £16m through performance-based add-ons.

That deal has since proven to be a bargain for the Villains, but Boro could yet make sizeable gains

Middlesbrough’s Rogers sell-on details

Rogers was viewed as a big talent at Manchester City and his Middlesbrough success affirmed the belief in his future. However, few anticipated him to star quite as he has with Aston Villa.

In his first full season at Villa Park, Rogers registered a fantastic 14 goals and 15 assists in 54 games across all competitions. He was ever-present for Unai Emery, earning a first England call-up and even scoring a hat-trick in a Champions League win over Celtic.

That has, somewhat unsurprisingly, caught the eye of some major clubs. And, if he is solid, Boro will benefit.

Though a specific number is not reported, The Northern Echo has said that the Championship side have a ‘very healthy sell-on’ in the deal. Boro have already benefitted from a number of their add-ons too.

Who wants Rogers?

Premier League big-spenders Chelsea have been linked with a marquee move for former Middlesbrough star Rogers, and a sizeable fee could be involved.

Amid Chelsea’s interest, a huge £90m price tag has been mentioned in reports.

Villa aren’t in the strongest of PSR positions, so they could be persuaded to cash in for the right money. However, there are perhaps others they can cash in on to raise funds if they need the financial wiggle room.

Nonetheless, Boro may be quietly hoping a deal comes to fruition to provide them with a welcome financial windfall.
