Newcastle United were linked with Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah last summer.
Newcastle United have reportedly renewed their interest in Liverpool defender Jarell Qunsah.
Speculation first emerged 12 months ago when the Magpies were sweating over PSR restrictions. As the June 30 deadline loomed, there was talk of Anthony Gordon being sold to Liverpool in a bombshell deal.
It is understood Quansah and Reds teammate Joe Gomez were mooted as possible bargaining chips to get Newcastle over the three-year threshold - and avoid a Premier League points deduction. Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh were sacrificed instead - a double whammy that left a sour taste at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United renew interest
Fast forward to the present and the Magpies are no longer in a tricky financial position. Toon chiefs have funds to spend after three windows without a significant first-team signing.
The Athletic now claim Bayer Leverkusen are considering a swoop for Quansah, viewed as a bit-part player at Anfield. In the same report, Newcastle are listed as another possible destination given the interest last year.
Liverpool have already done business with the German club as Florian Wirtz is set to finalise a club-record move in the coming days. It is stated that the Reds value the defender - who started the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle - at £40million.
Marc Guehi the No.1 target
NewcastleWorld understands Guehi remains United’s priority target after also failing to land their man last year. Crystal Palace played hardball 12 months ago as chairman Steve Parish demanded “superstar money” for the centre-back.
However, the Eagles are not in as strong a negotiating position this time. Guehi has just one year remaining on his current deal and is making no assurances about penning a new one.
No concrete offer has been made but Newcastle have funds to spend but know Guehi’s valuation will be closer to their price range last August. Sources a year ago were adamant that the Magpies did not bid as high as the £70million figure that did the rounds in media circles.

What Marc Guehi has said
Guehi stayed coy on his Palace future before leading the club to FA Cup final success against Manchester City last month. He said: "I think the most important thing is just always doing the best that I can for this football club. I come in every day and I try to be the same.
"I try to work hard. And you know, this football club has given me a lot. I'm still under contract at this football club, so my focus is always at this football club. So, you know, for me, the most important is just doing the best I can and seeing where the future holds.”
