Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has backed Andre Onana to succeed at Old Trafford.

Onana was signed by Erik ten Hag in 2023 and has endured a turbulent few years at United. His two seasons in England have been marred by errors and Ruben Amorim even took him out of the squad for the trip to Newcastle in April after two high-profile errors in the first leg of United's Europa League quarter-final tie with Lyon.

Amorim wants to sign a new goalkeeper this summer to compete with Onana, though rumours suggesting he could leave the club have refused to go away.

Van der Sar was asked to give his thoughts on the goalkeeper situation at Old Trafford and backed Onana to remain at United.

“I’ve known him already for a long time,” he told talkSport. “He spent four or five years at Ajax. I trained with him and saw him coming.

“He has great strengths. He’s athletic. He has good reaction saves. Good with his feet and everything. I’m sure he’s going to get over it.

“Sometimes it’s not easy. Sometimes your performances or the pressure there is. But I’ve seen him play for Ajax, for Inter, Champions League finals. I’m sure he’s going to be fine for next season.”

Even if Onana isn't sold this summer United's goalkeeping department is expected to be given a shake-up. Altay Bayindir could leave in search of more regular football, though veteran shot-stopped Tom Heaton remains in contract talks ahead of his deal expiring at the end of this month.
