Not Nunez: Fabrizio Romano says £160,000-a-week Liverpool star is top target for Atletico Madrid

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson is a top target for Atletico Madrid amid Milos Kerkez's expected arrival at Anfield, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Robertson is "appreciated internally" at Atletico, although a deal could be difficult because he's still rated highly by the Reds. The 31-year-old has a year left on his contract, but he is now Diego Simeone's top target at left-back.

Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Bournemouth left-back Kerkez, which casts doubt over Robertson's game time next season. The Scot appeared 45 times under Arne Slot last season but the club have been under pressure to find a long-term replacement.

The Scot could link up with Darwin Nunez at the Metropolitano

Romano reports that Robertson has become the "ideal candidate" to become Simeone's new left-back and they prefer him to AC Milan's Theo Hernandez. He's never played his football outside of the UK, having spent eight years with Liverpool and become a hero for the Reds.

Atleti have a history of signing Premier League talent, most recently swooping for Julian Alvarez and Conor Gallagher. Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier was the first big-name player to swap English football for the Metropolitano, and Robertson could become the latest.

Robertson spoke about his future recently and admitted he was "unsure what the future holds". Kerkez's expected signing would likely result in a decrease in his minutes, as the Reds are expected to spend £40m on the Hungarian.
