Arsenal’s striker search is heating up this summer, and the race for Viktor Gyökeres continues to be one of the transfer window’s most intriguing storylines. According to trusted journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners remain firmly in the picture for the Sporting CP striker, despite growing interest from Manchester United.
Romano has revealed that both Premier League clubs are in regular contact regarding Gyökeres, with Arsenal maintaining a particularly strong presence in the conversation. While Manchester United are reportedly calling “again and again” for the Sweden international, Arsenal have not stepped away. In fact, Romano described it as “active contact” – a clear sign that Mikel Arteta and the club’s recruitment team still consider the striker a major option this summer.
“Manchester United keep calling for Viktor Gyökeres,” Romano explained. “But don’t forget Arsenal, because Arsenal remain in active contact. For Gyökeres, new contacts are taking place. He remains a strong option for Arsenal & a case to watch for the next weeks.”
The 27-year-old had a sensational season in Portugal with Sporting, scoring 43 goals across all competitions and registering several assists. His explosive power, intelligent movement, and finishing ability have made him one of the hottest striker properties on the market. That form has inevitably attracted interest from top clubs, and the competition for his signature is expected to intensify in the coming weeks.
For Arsenal, Gyökeres presents a slightly different profile compared to Benjamin Šeško – another striker they are seriously pursuing. While Šeško is younger and seen as a long-term project with a high ceiling, Gyökeres is considered more of a proven, ready-made goal-scorer who could make an immediate impact in the Premier League.
There are, however, challenges to any deal. Sporting CP are believed to be demanding the full value of Gyökeres’ release clause, which sits at €100 million. That figure could prove problematic for both Arsenal and Manchester United, unless negotiations open the door to a slightly reduced or structured fee. In Arsenal’s case, much could depend on the resolution of their interest in Šeško and whether a breakthrough is made with RB Leipzig.
Gyökeres, for his part, has kept quiet on his future, choosing to focus on preparations for the upcoming season and international duty. However, it’s widely believed that he is open to a move, especially if it provides Champions League football and the chance to lead the line for one of Europe’s elite clubs.
As the summer unfolds, Arsenal are expected to push hard to bring in a new No.9 – and based on Romano’s latest update, Gyökeres remains firmly on their radar. Whether Arsenal can beat Manchester United to his signature remains to be seen, but fans can expect more twists in the coming weeks.
One thing is certain: this transfer battle is far from over.
