Arthur Smith Reveals His Goal For Steelers’ New Look Offense

For years, the Pittsburgh Steelers have had one of the most outdated and predictable offenses in all of football.

The days of their bruising and dominant running attack are long gone, and they haven’t had an explosive passing game since prime Ben Roethlisberger was out there.

That’s why Arthur Smith wants to make sure that changes in his second year as offensive coordinator.

When asked about his new-look offense, Smith claimed that he wanted it to be ‘explosive.’

> “We don’t want to be three yards and a cloud of dust,” Smith [said](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6420389/2025/06/12/pittsburgh-steelers-arthur-smith-aaron-rodgers-dk-metcalf/). “You want to be explosive. You want to be the best offense in the league. That’s your goal.”

A lot of that will have to do with the offensive line.

They’re young and inexperienced, and they’ve struggled to keep the quarterback out of harm’s way for years now.

Aaron Rodgers might be an upgrade over Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, but he’s never been mobile, and that’s not going to change at this point in his career.

If they can give him a clean pocket and establish the running game, they might finally be able to get over the hump and win a playoff game for the first time in almost a decade.

If not, game-planning, scheming, and play-calling won’t make much of a difference.

Smith is a respected offensive coordinator, and we’ve already seen what he’s done with run-heavy offenses like the Tennessee Titans’.

Even so, the Steelers don’t have prime Derrick Henry to bulldoze his way through defenders.

This will be a crucial campaign for Mike Tomlin’s team.

The fans seem to be running out of patience, and just making the playoffs after barely getting over .500 might not be enough anymore.
