Manchester United are desperate for cash this summer but could be set to face a £20 million setback after one of Ruben Amorim’s decisions backfired.
Ruben Amorim is overseeing a significant overhaul at Manchester United, identifying several players who no longer fit into his vision for the squad. Among those set to depart, one player has already drawn strong interest from top European clubs.
With preparations for next season well underway, Amorim and the United leadership team are managing both incoming and outgoing transfers.
The club has finalised the signing of Matheus Cunha, while negotiations for Bryan Mbeumo are progressing, with hopes of completing the deal soon.
On the departure front, United are actively working to move on several high-profile names. Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia are all expected to exit Old Trafford.
Additionally, Alejandro Garnacho has been told by Amorim that he is free to explore opportunities elsewhere after the winger criticised the head coach for benching him in the Europa League final.
United could face £20m setback
Garnacho’s exit this summer appears to be guaranteed after Amorim burned bridges with the 20-year-old in a meeting before the final game of the season against Aston Villa.
Reports suggest that Amorim’s words were strong in that instance, and some have wondered whether it would impact the player’s valuation at all.
According to a new report from GiveMeSport, the Reds are in danger of having to offload Garnacho for almost £20 million less than they were initially planning.
It is claimed that Amorim’s decision to single out the Argentine has weakened United’s negotiating position with interested clubs, who are looking to strike a cut-price deal for the player.
United initially wanted to sell Garnacho for around £70 million but it is stated that suitors have not even indicated that they are willing to pay £50 million for him.
The report finalised that Amorim’s decision is ‘backfiring’ – as United began the process of trying to sell Garnacho and others last month, but have struggled to find interested parties willing to match their valuations and could have to lower demands in the coming weeks.
Garnacho valuation would skyrocket if United were buying
In truth, most United fans would accept the deal being agreed at around £50 million even though Garnacho is almost certainly worth more.
United are not great in the selling department and clubs know that they need to sell players. When you’re in such a position, teams will always lowball you in such deals.

If the Reds were the ones buying, Garnacho would probably be valued closer to £80 million, because his talent is undeniable.
But, for now, getting £50 million of pure profit onto the books seems like it will be enough to secure some important signings for Amorim. In the long-term, however, United need to be in a position where they aren’t pressured to accept lowball offers.
