Another Liverpool fullback is a target for Madrid, but the club is prepared

Atletico Madrid have earmarked Liverpool legend Andy Robertson as their first-choice left-back target amid the Reds’ pursuit of Milos Kerkez. Liverpool wants Kerkez from Bournemouth to bolster their defence after Robertson struggled with consistency during last season under Arne Slot.

Liverpool got the first glimpse of Robertson’s struggle during Jurgen Klopp’s last season as the manager of the Merseyside club. The 31-year-old suffered a couple of injury layoffs during the 2023-24 season, along with a slight drop in his performances.

At the same time, Robertson’s deputy Kostas Tsimikas faced a similar issue, which put a lot of stress on Liverpool. Last season under Arne Slot, Robertson continued to struggle with inconsistencies and made many costly errors in the defensive phases.

However, Robertson’s struggle with consistency in performance has not diminished his legacy and his positive relationship with the Reds fanbase. The majority of the Liverpool fanbase wants the Scotland captain to stay and compete with any new potential left-back signing.

Apart from the strong bond, strong record as a left-back, Robertson has the essential leadership qualities that the squad needs. According to Fabrizio Romano, Atletico want Robertson, with the Scotsman keen on joining them amid interest for Kerkez from Liverpool.

Given Robertson’s importance, Liverpool would demand a healthy price tag only because the Scotsman is willing to leave the club. With Tsimikas’ future at Liverpool also uncertain, losing two left-backs altogether could demand more defensive signings from the club.

There is a potential for the Reds to target a centre-back capable of playing as a left-back to solve their persisting defensive problems. Liverpool have long desired a left-footed centre-back to compete with captain Virgil van Dijk for the left centre-back position.
