Internationals: Honours even in Under-19 Euros opener

Chelsea trio Harrison Murray-Campbell, Kiano Dyer and Shumaira Mheuka helped England fight back to earn a point in their first game at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship.

All three Blues in the England squad were named in the starting line-up for their first game of the group stage, as the Young Lions faced Norway in the Romanian city of Ploiesti on Saturday afternoon.

It was a meeting between the reigning champions, England, against a Norway side which had impressed by going unbeaten throughout their qualifying campaign. It was the holders who dominated possession and it seemed they could make an excellent start to their defence of the trophy when taking the lead just 11 minutes in.

For a moment it looked like that start would get even better soon after, but Mheuka’s powerful header came back off the crossbar. Norway then showed their own threat and turned things around to lead 2-1 by the break, despite England hitting the woodwork for a second time.

Mheuka went close again in the second half, but it wasn’t until 10 minutes from the end that England found their equaliser, when captain Mikey Moore converted from the penalty spot to earn a point for the Young Lions.

England’s next match is against Germany in Bucharest at 6pm UK time on Tuesday. They then stay in the capital to conclude the group stage with a meeting with the Netherlands at the same time on Friday.
