Report: Man Utd 'make contact' to sign player who is the world's best in his position to replace £44m star

Manchester United have an exhaustive list of positions that need to be strengthened this summer.

It was the worst ever Premier League campaign, which makes a summer rebuild nothing short of necessary.

Manchester United have already signed Matheus Cunha in a move to improve the number 10 options at Ruben Amorim’s disposal after a season which saw the attack regularly falter.

Ineos are looking to revamp the entire frontline with planned moves for both Bryan Mbeumo and Viktor Gyokeres currently being worked on by Jason Wilcox and Christopher Vivell.

After bolstering the attack, United have two additional priorities in the transfer market. First, another midfielder, and then to add a goalkeeper to either replace or challenge Andre Onana.

Now, United have been linked with signing one of the world’s best in this position.

The efforts for a new goalkeeper are on the back burner for United; however, when asked about whether he will leave this summer, Onana admitted his future at United is in the air.

Now, it has been reported by ESPN Argentina’s Leo Paradizo that Onana will leave Old Trafford this summer, with Ineos already making plans over the replacement.

It is claimed that Aston Villa’s number one, Emiliano Martinez, is aware that United want him in goal next season and that the Red Devils have already made contact with the player.

If this is true, it will absolutely signal the end for £44m 2023 signing Onana, considering there is no chance both goalkeepers can co-exist, and if contact is already made, then United must have a plan to sell Onana.

Having Martinez would be a big upgrade for United, and the perfect kind of winning character which the team has been lacking, while he is also Premier League proven.

Martinez was named world’s best goalkeeper in 2024

Martinez is not only a good Premier League goalkeeper but also the starting shot stopper for the reigning World Cup champions, Argentina, where he is an icon.

His performances with the national team raised him from being considered very good to being renowned as the best in the world.

This is clear as Martinez won the Golden Glove in the Copa America 2021 and 2024, and also in the 2022 World Cup. This form led to Martinez being named the Yashin Trophy (best goalkeeper in the world) winner twice in a row in 2023 and 2024.

He would be a serious upgrade for United in goal, based on his confidence and dominance in the air, more so than shot-stopping. But we are unlikely to see him making individual errors as often as the Cameroonian did last campaign.

Martinez won’t come cheap.
