‘Surprised me’: Journalist says he’s shocked after what he’s been told about Chelsea and Mike Maignan

Chelsea could well be in the market for a new goalkeeper in this transfer window.

Indeed, Robert Sanchez received a lot of criticism last season, and if Chelsea want to kick on, they need to sign a new number one.

Chelsea have eyed a few interesting goalkeeping options as of late.

Chelsea were keen on Bart Verbruggen at one point, while Mike Maignan has been linked with Chelsea as of late.

Speaking on the London is Blue Podcast, Matt Law has been discussing Chelsea’s links to Maignan, and he says that he’s been surprised by how much interest the Blues have shown in the AC Milan star up to this point.

Matt Law surprised Chelsea have gone in for Mike Maignan

Law spoke about Chelsea and their recent moves for Maignan.

Chelsea have gone in guns blazing for Maignan, opening talks last week to sign the Milan star.

However, Law had been told heading into the summer that this deal would be more one to watch in late August, but here we are in mid-June and Maignan is a big talking point at Stamford Bridge.

“What took me by surprise is when I got a little tickle towards the end of last season that they were interested in his situation, it was told to me then it was one to probably watch for late August, for if he hadn’t signed a contract and hadn’t gone anywhere and there was a potential of quite a favourable deal,” Law said.

“And the thing that surprised me obviously is it went the other way. They went for him earlier or made the check on him earlier rather than later and looked at doing it in time for the Club World Cup.

“So that’s the part of that that took me by surprise, not the interest. Look, they put a valuation on him, about 15 million pounds and wouldn’t deviate from it. Now I wrote when it came out that they had made a check on him because I’m not convinced that even got to the stage of them actually making a proper formal bid for him this time around”

Chelsea’s goalkeeping woes

Chelsea really haven’t had the best of luck when it comes to signing goalkeepers in recent years.

Indeed, the Blues have really struggled to replace Thibaut Courtois since his departure from Stamford Bridge.

Courtois was brilliant for Chelsea, and since then, the Blues have bounced from keeper to keeper.

Kepa Arrizabalaga 163 59 175

Edouard Mendy 105 86 49

Robert Sanchez 55 15 67

Kepa Arrizabalaga had plenty of struggles at Chelsea, and now Kepa is set to join Arsenal.

Edouard Mendy started well at Chelsea, but he had a downturn in form, eventually leading to a move to Saudi Arabia.

On top of that, Robert Sanchez has struggled in recent times too.

Mike Maignan would be a decent solution for Chelsea in goal, but, as Law says, so far, Chelsea haven’t made a bid for the Milan ace.
