Speed is arguably the most coveted trait among NFL teams. It doesn’t matter what position you play. If you’re fast, you almost certainly will get at least a tryout in the pros. Look at the greats in league history; many have that in common. They were fast relative to their position. For Ruben Hyppolite, that is especially true. The number of linebackers who can run a 4.39 in the 40 can be counted on one hand. It is little wonder the Chicago Bears took an interest in him. Dennis Allen covets speed on his defense. Hyppolite would’ve stood out immediately.
There is a fair question worth asking, though. If he was always that fast, it begs the question of why he chose to play linebacker. Coaches in high school and college almost certainly would’ve approached him about playing other positions like running back or, particularly, wide receiver. During an interview, Mully & Haugh for 670 The Score asked the rookie about it. Hyppolite didn’t need long to think about it. The decision came down to simple mathematics in his mind.
There aren’t any receivers who weigh 240 lbs.
Ruben Hyppolite needed to play what felt natural.
Most wide receivers average around 200 lbs in weight. Running backs are between 215 and 225 lbs. Linebackers sit around 245. The decision became a relatively straightforward one for Ruben Hyppolite. His natural body type fits that weight range. Trying to play 20-40 lbs lighter, likely wouldn’t have seen him playing at his athletic best. Ruben Hyppolite was smart enough to know what gave him the best chance to reach the big dance. You can’t argue the results. He became a 4th round pick for an organization with one of the richest defensive histories in the NFL. Word is he’s already making waves in early practices. Maybe the Bears knew what they were doing. All he needed was an opportunity. That speed should serve him well.
