The move for Lopez comes in the aftermath of Matheus Cunha’s departure to Manchester United.

While Lopez is not a direct replacement for Cunha, there is one area where he performs significantly better than the Brazilian, according to the stats.

Fer Lopez has a much better defensive work rate than Matheus Cunha

Cunha shouldered a lot of the creative responsibility for Wolves this season, contributing… As such, his ability on this front cannot be questioned.

At times, however, his attitude and disciplinary record were not up to scratch.

Judging by his work rate, especially defensively, the same cannot be said for Fer Lopez.

What an absolute sensation he has been in Gary O’Neil’s Wolves side – on another level in the last 18 months but has started this season incredibly.

Providing he brings the same application once in the Old Gold, it is that sort of attitude that will endear Lopez to the Wolves faithful.

How does Fer Lopez perform across more basic metrics?

At the start of the 2024/25 season, Lopez was playing for Celta Vigo’s B team in the Spanish third tier.

After four goals and two assists in 17 appearances, along with several strong performances, he was promoted to Celta Vigo’s first team.

While finding the step up in standard slightly more difficult – the 21-year-old only scored two goals and provided no assists in 17 La Liga appearances – he helped his side to a strong seventh-place finish and Europa League qualification.

Lopez also excelled in the Copa Del Rey, scoring two goals across three appearances and earning an average rating of 7.50, according to SofaScore.

The midfielder is still raw, but there is talent to be developed there. Most importantly, and as mentioned above, his attitude appears to be first-rate, something that will help get the Wolves fans onside should he make the move to Molineux.
