Report: Spurs among Kevin Durant’s preferred trade destinations

The San Antonio Spurs may be back in the running for Kevin Durant. According to a tweet from ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Phoenix Suns’ star wing prefers to be traded to the Spurs, Houston Rockets, or Miami Heat.

The Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets are 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant's preferred trade destinations out of Phoenix, sources tell ESPN. Durant’s contract expires at the end of the 2025-26 season, so where he decides to commit long term plays a major role in trade conversations. Not many teams are willing to sacrifice key assets for a one-year rental, especially a player entering his age 37 season. Durant specifically requesting the Spurs should give them some leverage in trade discussions, but they’ll still need to beat out offer from the Rockets and Heat.

The report comes days after Jake Fischer reported that trade talks between the Spurs and Suns had stalled. Reportedly, the Suns have not been enthused with San Antonio’s offers that included Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Harrison Barnes. The Suns requests for Stephon Castle and the number two pick in the draft to be included have been a non-starter for San Antonio.

Rumors are the Rockets deal would center around Jabari Smith Jr. and Jalen Green, two young players with more upside and intrigue than San Antonio’s wings. They also own the 10th pick in the draft, a slightly more valuable piece than the 14th selection the Spurs own. Nothing has leaked from conversations with the Heat, but it would be fair to assume the Suns would covet their younger players like Kel’el Ware, Nikola Jovic or Jaime Jaquez Jr plus draft capital.

Amongst the three teams that Durant desires, the Spurs may have the weakest offer – unless they add more to it. The next step that would strengthen their chances is if Durant whittled his list down to just San Antonio. Otherwise they may just be outbid by Miami or Houston.

Charania recently said he expected a Durant trade to be done within the next few days. We should know if KD will don the Silver and Black soon. For now, it seems that they are still in the running.
