Emi Martinez to Man United transfer update emerges as £85m 'interest' ramped up

Emi Martinez

Man United are reportedly in talks with Emi Martinez about a transfer

Manchester United are continuing their search for reinforcements following last season's torrid performance in the Premier League. Matheus Cunha is already through the door while reports suggest they face a battle to land Bryan Mbeumo with Tottenham Hotspur rumoured to also hold an interest in the Brentford winger.

Ruben Amorim has an important summer on the horizon as they are without European football with their focus on the top-flight, FA Cup and League Cup. On Saturday, speculation suggested that Viktor Gyokeres had turned down a move to Old Trafford in favour of a switch to Premier League rivals Arsenal.

United will find out their schedule for the campaign on Wednesday when the Premier League fixtures are released at 9am, for the Portuguese head coach he will have a clearer complexion of what lies ahead with the preparations due to ramp up.

The MEN has taken a look at the latest transfer news and gossip.

Manchester United 'in talks' with Emi Martinez

According to ESPN Argentina, Manchester United have began talks with Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez over a summer move.

Andre Onana faces an uncertain future after a difficult season between the sticks at Old Trafford and it appears that reports in South America are intensifying over the World Cup-winning goalkeeper making the move to the North West.

"Talks have already begun, contacts so that Martinez can join Manchester United," Leo Paradizo said on ESPNF10.

"Of all the possibilities that he has in his immediate future, Manchester United is the one that excites him the most.

"The clubs are going to take their time, but yes, I can confirm that the contact between Manchester United and Martinez have already started."

He followed up in a tweet: "Dibu Martínez already knows that Manchester United wants him in goal next season.

"Onana will leave, and they're going after the Argentina national team goalkeeper."

MEN says: The goalkeeping department is one of the number of positions that United need to strengthen in the summer and it quickly became clear that Onana's struggles were having a significant bearing on the campaign. However, without any real competition, the shot-stopper kept his place in the first-team. If United want to find themselves at the top end of the table, they need to rectify their goalkeeping struggles and the arrival of a Premier League-proven goalkeeper like Martinez would go a long way. However, it's worth bearing in mind he will be suspended for the start of the season after his red card at Old Trafford.

United ramp up approach after Gyokeres disappointment

According to various reports, Man United are set to miss out on Gyokeres after the Sweden international expressed his desire to move to the Premier League and to the Emirates Stadium.

It was claimed that Amorim's side held exploratory talks with the 27-year-old over a blockbuster summer move as they look to improve their attacking department.

However, it has been suggested that United could turn their attention from the Swede to Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike.

United reportedly face competition from Chelsea and Liverpool for the France attacker.

The Mirror have reported that Amorim's side are ready to ramp up interest in the 22-year-old after receiving news of Gyokeres' preference.

MEN says: It will be a blow to lose out on a striker who has scored 92 goals in 104 appearances, especially with Amorim bringing him to the Portuguese top-flight. United have already missed out on Liam Delap and the reports surrounding their latest disappointment will only add pressure to their hunt to fire attacking reinforcements. Ekitike is said to be courting interest from around Europe already and the Premier League with Frankfurt wanting around £85m for a player with his prime years ahead of him he could be a good piece of business. However, United have been found guilty of overspending in the past which has come back to haunt them.
