Arsenal could have a golden opportunity to improve out wide this summer, thanks to their rival clubs being occupied by other pursuits. The Gunners are keen to bolster their forward ranks over the coming months, with several options being assessed.
Mikel Arteta is keen to acquire the services of at least one winger who can provide an alternative option to Gabriel Martinelli on the left, but also cover right-winger Bukayo Saka when he is rotated out of the starting XI.
Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium as a result, but the Gunners aren’t the only side in the race to secure his signature. Barcelona and Bayern Munich have both held talks with the Spaniard, and a pricey transfer battle looks set to break out between the two European giants.
Although Williams heading elsewhere may initially appear bad news for Arsenal, it does offer them an alternative opportunity. Bayern are occupied by looking to lure the Spaniard to the Bundesliga, which could afford the Gunners an uncontested opportunity to sign Brighton star Kaoru Mitoma.
According to Sky Sports Germany, Bayern and Arsenal have both shortlisted the Japan international as a target this summer. The Gunners are looking at numerous profiles who could fit the bill in north London, and Mitoma is one of those who new sporting director Andrea Berta has taken a shine to.
The 28-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from Brighton in recent weeks, but Bayern’s push to sign Williams would suggest that he is not the top target at the Allianz Arena at present.
The Seagulls are known to be tough negotiators in the transfer market, but the Gunners may have the chance to strike a deal for Mitoma if there is a lack of interest from elsewhere in Europe.
Mitoma has spoken about his desire to play Champions League football in years gone by, and although he has not indicated that he wants to leave Brighton this summer, the prospect of competing for silverware could prove enticing. It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will look to capitalise on the opening but Mitoma would certainly improve Arteta's team.
