Manchester United have given green light to transfer that was unthinkable just months ago

Garnacho celebrates with Fernandes

Alejandro Garnacho's career at Manchester United has been anything but uneventful.

For all the winger's obvious talent, disciplinary issues have threatened to derail his time at the club on a number of occasions. That threat has now become a reality.

Perhaps the biggest shame in all of this is that Ruben Amorim and Garnacho tried to make it work. After Amorim dropped Garnacho and Marcus Rashford from the Manchester derby squad in December, the latter didn't make another appearance for United and was soon shipped out on loan to Aston Villa. Garnacho went the opposite way, playing a part in every game after the derby victory bar the final day win over Villa.

Despite being asked to play out of position as a No.10, Garnacho looked to be an indispensable member of Amroim's squad. The inconsistency and occasional lack of composure in front of goal that's to be expected from a 20-year-old remained, but Garnacho and Amorim looked set to enjoy a strong working relationship. Until it all went pear-shaped.

Having been listed as one of just four players who were deemed 'untouchable' by the club last year, Garnacho has now been told he is welcome to leave the club should they receive an acceptable offer.

United rejected a £40million offer from Napoli for Garnacho in the mid-season transfer window and they are expected to hold out for a higher fee than what Napoli offered.

From talk of one day inheriting the famous No.7 shirt and being the face of United's attack for years to come, to a player the club are happy to part ways with.

Amorim isn't the first United manager to have been crossed by Garnacho, and while allowances should be made for one so young, there comes a point where you have to draw a line in the sand and decide it's best for both parties to go their separate ways.

Nobody saw Garnacho's exit coming, should indeed the club receive an acceptable offer for the youngster, but it might be for the best.
