Jarell Quansah, the Liverpool centre-back, has hinted at a potential move away from Anfield this summer as Newcastle United keep tabs on the defender's situation.
Quansah has struggled to secure a regular spot in Arne Slot's title-winning squad and is one of a number of defenders on Newcastle's radar as they look to strengthen their backline this summer.
Despite starting Liverpool's Premier League opener against Ipswich Town, Quansah was substituted at half-time and didn't start another league game in his preferred centre-back role until after the title had been clinched.
His appearances were mostly limited to substitute roles, starts in cup competitions, and temporary stints at right-back due to an injury crisis - including the Carabao Cup Final against Newcastle at Wembley
Speculation about Quansah's future has been rife, with recent reports linking him to a move to Bayer Leverkusen. The Athletic suggests that Leverkusen are considering a move for the 22-year-old, who Liverpool value at approximately £40million, while Newcastle are also monitoring the situation.
Speaking ahead of England U21's group stage match against Slovenia, Quansah admitted he is thinking about his future and how he plays the game.
He said: "It's definitely developing. I'm not getting too high or too low with anything. I think I can take massive learnings from the three seasons I've had in professional football.
"From Bristol Rovers [on loan in 2023] until now, to put perspective and look back I'm in a very good position to take the next step. It comes with working hard and staying focused on what I can control. As for the future, it'll put me in the best stead if I just keep my head down and keep working."
Quansah is poised to play in Sunday's fixture against Slovenia following his role in Thursday's 3-1 victory over the Czech Republic. The Liverpool centre-back was on the pitch for the full match, contributing to a win that saw Newcastle defender Tino Livramento named man of the match.
The Liverpool man wants to develop as a leader this tournament, believing it will serve him well for his career.
“It was an ideal start," he said. "I think the first game of any tournament can be very hostile, especially away from home and Czech supporters came in numbers so to settle our nerves and feel our way into a tournament with a good and controlled win was important.
“You go from playing with world class players who have done it for years to this level with players trying to get to that level.
“To try and lead from the back…it is important because of the experience I’ve had. To become a leader and step up to that role is important for my future.”
Over the course of the season, Quansah has made 25 appearances for Liverpool, starting in just 13 of those games. Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have been the first-choice pairing at the heart of defence, though Joe Gomez filled in for six Premier League games in December when Konate was unavailable.
Arne Slot utilised Quansah in the right-back position during the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle in March and spoke about the necessity for the player to develop greater "consistency" in his performances as the season concluded. Slot has frequently expressed his belief in Quansah's potential to be a key figure in his long-term plans for the squad.
Newcastle came close to signing Quansah last summer as they looked to a deal that would help their PSR situation. Eddie Howe remains a fan of the player but has earmarked Marc Guehi as his first choice centre-back target this summer.
