Manchester United have been handed a blow in their hopes of signing Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer, with the player reportedly ready to turn down the chance of a move to Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old has established himself as one of the most dangerous strikers in Europe since moving to Sporting. In his 102 appearances in the Portuguese league, he has scored 97 goals.

Reports in Portugal over the weekend suggested that the Sweden international had rejected a move to United. That would see him give up the chance of a reunion with former manager Ruben Amorim.

The United boss is keen to add further to his squad following the £62.5 million arrival of Matheus Cunha. A key target was Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, but he opted for a £30 million move to Chelsea.

It now seems that another transfer target, Gyokeres, has made his feelings known on a transfer. The Guardian report that Gyokeres’ representatives have told the club that he does not wish to join.

It’s then added that the striker views a move to Arsenal as his preferred option due to the club playing in the Champions League next season. The player is reported to have said that signing for Arsenal would be a “dream.”

A disappointing season in 2024/25 means that United are unable to offer any European football in the upcoming season due to a 15th-place Premier League finish and a loss in the Europa League final against Tottenham.

United are, however, working on a deal to sign Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. The player is keen to sign for the club, with United expected to pay a fee in the region of around £60 million if a deal is completed.
