Viktor Gyokeres gives one-word Arsenal transfer response

Viktor Gyokeres reportedly sees Arsenal as a "dream" transfer over Manchester United.

Sky Sports reported on Tuesday that United have made a move for Gyokeres as they look to bolster their striking options this summer. The Swedish international has a strong connection with United manager Ruben Amorim from their time in Portugal, which many at Old Trafford hope could sway him towards the club.

But The Guardian claim that the player’s representatives have told United he does not wish to join the club. Instead, Gyokeres reportedly views Arsenal as his preferred option since they will play in the Champions League next season.

Gyokeres has risen to prominence as one of Europe's top strikers in recent seasons, netting an impressive 97 goals in 102 matches since his transfer from Coventry City to Liga Portugal in July 2023. The forward contributed 39 of those goals in this season's league campaign, aiding Sporting in securing a memorable league and cup double.

Despite a release clause of around £84million (€100m), the 27-year-old is said to have a gentleman's agreement to depart Sporting this summer for offers exceeding £58m (€70m).

However, Sporting's president Frederico Varandas disclosed on Wednesday that no assurances were given to Gyokeres about facilitating a cheaper exit this summer.

"It was agreed that Sporting would not demand his release clause at the end of the season, especially because he was going to be 27," Varandas said. "We knew about Viktor's dream of going to a club where he could fight for the Champions League and we have common sense.

"We guaranteed that we would not demand €100m. Sporting has common sense, it keeps its word.

"The president of Sporting said that the club would not demand the clause and that we would adjust the value to Viktor's performance, he was one of the best players to step on the pitch in Portugal."
