Rio Ferdinand tells Man Utd target to be a 'nightmare' - 'I did that at Leeds United'

Rio Ferdinand has urged Manchester United target Viktor Gyokeres to cause a nightmare at Sporting CP to ensure he leaves the Portuguese club as anticipated - admitting he did similar at Leeds United.

Speculation over Sweden international Gyokeres, 27, and his Sporting CP future remains at fever pitch this summer. After plundering 97 goals in two seasons for Sporting CP, the 26-cap striker is hot property.

Man Utd and Arsenal are thought to be leading the race for his signature. However, the most recent reports argue that Gyokeres could be about to snub the Red Devils, despite connections to head coach Ruben Amorim from their time together in the Portuguese capital.

Either way, the key talking point around Gyokeres and a proposed move is an alleged 'gentleman's agreement' out his contract, which would allow him to leave Sporting CP for a reduced price.

His release clause is thought to stand at £83.6m - with the 'gentleman's agreement' seemingly offering up a discount for potential suitors.

It's a high-profile transfer saga which is set to continue - and Ferdinand knows all about that from his controversial spell with Leeds. The defender-turned-TV pundit spent just under two years at Leeds, before joining rivals Man Utd for £30million-plus in 2002 - in a deal that still irks supporters 23 years on.

Ferdinand flagged up his own transfer when asked to provide his thoughts on Gyokeres. He told talkSPORT: "I'd be causing him [Sporting CP president, Frederico Varandas] a nightmare to get out if we had an agreement.

"I did that at Leeds. I heard Man Utd were interested in me and I knew Leeds had to let me go.

"I went to Peter Ridsdale and said; 'Listen, I know that you need to sell me, let's not haggle over a couple of million here or there. Get a deal done'.

"I was there for hours waiting. He ended up getting the deal done."
