Liverpool could be one of the teams who are “in the race” to sign a world-renowned attacking player this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.
The Reds may have won the Premier League title last season, but there were some issues in attack, not least with Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota.
Neither feel like the answer for Liverpool at centre forward, and it would be a surprise if a new option wasn’t brought in there ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
Speaking to Football Insider, O’Rourke talked up the idea of the Reds signing Napoli striker Victor Osimhen this summer, with the Nigerian on loan at Galatasaray of late:
“Victor Osimhen is going into his final year at Napoli. Galatasaray would love to sign him on a permanent basis if possible and Napoli would prefer to cash in rather than let him run down his contract,” O’Rourke said.
“Al-Hilal made numerous offers for Osimhen but it seems the player himself would prefer to stay in Europe. Liverpool have been linked with Osimhen as a potential target, especially if Darwin Nunez was to leave this summer which seems more and more likely.
“He’s on the list of a number of clubs due to his contract situation at Napoli. Manchester United are also looking at Osimhen as they looked to bring in a new number nine. His future is up in the air and it’s a pretty open race for his signature as well.”
Would Osimhen thrive at Liverpool?
Osimhen’s stock has arguably fallen a little, having not kicked on at Napoli and been loaned out to Galatasaray, but he is still a top-level striker who has impressed hugely in Turkey, scoring 37 goals in 41 appearances, as well as being hailed by Peter Etebo:
“Osimhen is one of the best forwards in the world. I think the football community also accepts this. I think he did a good thing by coming to Galatasaray. He is a very willing player on the field, who gives everything for his team. He continues to score goals. I think he will continue to score goals. I think he will do very successful things in his future career.”
It is easy to see Osimhen thriving for Liverpool, given his pace, power and ruthlessness in front of goal, but it remains to be seen if the Reds will be able to afford both him and Florian Wirtz.
Their interest also doesn’t appear to be overly concrete, so as things stand, it feels more likely that a cheaper option could come in, such as Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike.
