Manchester United could have potentially moved back ahead of Arsenal in their mooted pursuit of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres as the Gunners reportedly get ready to "freeze" their interest.
Earlier this week, the Swede's seemingly drama-free exit from the Portuguese team took a twist when Sporting's president Frederico Varandas denied that he agreed to let Gyokeres leave for £51million, plus £8.5million in add-ons. Gyokeres' camp hit back that they had this gentleman's agreement in writing, but Sporting have been holding firm that he will only leave for the release clause of £68million in his contract.
While this has been going on, Arsenal have reportedly been looking to force through a deal for less than that fee. However, despite the striker appearing to be unhappy with the situation, the Lisbon club have stuck to their guns.
Now, reports in Portugal suggest Arsenal have reached their breaking point and are now freezing their pursuit of the striker. Record understands that the Gunners are now looking at different options to strengthen their forward line for Mikel Arteta next season.
RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko is currently at the top of Arsenal's list, while Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins is also thought to be an option if Gyokeres can't be purchased. In the meantime, this is all good news for United, who are eager to add a centre-forward to their attack.
Ruben Amorim reportedly still regards Gyokeres as his "top target" for this summer after the pair enjoyed a fruitful relationship at Sporting before United swooped in for the head coach. The 27-year-old would arguably be ideal for United considering he knows the system Amorim wants to play, plus his goal-scoring record in Portugal is fantastic.
Since leaving Coventry City for Portugal, Gyokeres has scored an astounding 97 goals in 102 appearances across all competitions. This includes six in eight Champions League matches and five in nine Europa League games.
