The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are running it back with their core.
Just when most people assumed that Chris Godwin would be on his way out, the star wide receiver opted to take less money to stay at Raymond James Stadium.
However, even though things might look the same for Todd Bowles’ team, there will be something slightly different.
Godwin will now go as ‘Godwin Jr.’
In a heartfelt post shared by the Bucs on Instagram, they reported that the star wide receiver has chosen to pay tribute to his father by adding the ‘Jr.’ on the back of his jersey:
> “As a professional athlete, you are always recognized for the name on the front of your jersey, but I also play for the name that’s printed on the back,” Godwin wrote in the Instagram post. “That’s why I’ve chosen to add ‘Jr.’ to my name in honor of the man who gave so unselfishly of himself to others and helped mold me into who I am today. Love you, Pops!”
Godwin sustained a season-ending injury last season.
It was the second time in his career that his season was cut short with a major ailment.
Even so, the team still has high hopes for his partnership with Mike Evans and Baker Mayfield.
When they’re at full strength, they have a strong case for being the most physical and biggest wide receiver tandem in the entire league.
They’re both a mismatch in the endzone, not to mention major threats in the open field.
The Buccaneers will have their work cut out for them next season, now that Michael Penix Jr. will take the reins for the Atlanta Falcons right out of the gate.
Still, they should continue to be the team to beat in the NFC South Division until proven otherwise, especially if Mayfield continues to play at such a high level and Godwin returns to his usual shape once he’s healthy enough to play.
