The Dallas Cowboys made a substantial gamble this offseason.
They needed another wide receiver to take some pressure off CeeDee Lamb, and they went after one of the most promising ones in the league.
Then again, as talented and athletic as George Pickens is, he also comes with some baggage.
Pickens has developed a bad rap in the league for being immature, picking fights in games, and throwing tantrums on the field and social media, even when his team is winning.
Nevertheless, Dak Prescott wants to shut down the outside noise.
When asked about his new star pass-catcher and his many instances of worrisome behavior, he talked about the importance of giving everybody a clean slate and a chance to prove who they are, regardless of what people say about them:
> “I think that’s why you should never really listen to what somebody else says about somebody,” Prescott [said](https://www.dallascowboys.com/news/dak-prescott-nixes-narrative-about-pickens-character-restates-endgame-i-wanna-win-a-championship) of his new, additional superstar receiver, George Pickens. “I think you should find out for yourself who they are and allow them to reveal their character to you. The guy’s been great. He’s been phenomenal. It’s a guy that loves football, loves his teammates, and he’s been excited every day that he’s been there. I’m just super excited that he’s on our team.”
Pickens has all the tools to be one of the best wide receivers in the game.
Unfortunately, as we’ve seen so many times in the past, he may also be his own worst enemy.
There were legitimate reasons to be worried about giving him a contract extension.
If he had acted out under his current contract, one could only imagine his demeanor once he had been paid big bucks.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has been there and done that way too many times in the past, which is why he ultimately chose to move on from him, even though his team needed him.
Hopefully, he’ll make the most of this clean slate and finally live up to his potential.
