Andy Robertson could soon follow Trent Alexander-Arnold in swapping Liverpool for Madrid.
TBR Football understand Robertson is keen on a move to Atletico Madrid after Diego Simeone’s side opened talks with the Liverpool No.26 and his representatives.
The development comes as Liverpool close in on Milos Kerkez – the Bournemouth No.3 is expected to replace the Scotland international in the starting XI under Arne Slot.
As Atletico Madrid continue talks with Andy Robertson, it is worth a look at what the 31-year-old said about Liverpool back in May 2021.
Andy Robertson said he would like to retire at Liverpool
Speaking to PLZ Soccer over four years ago, the Glaswegian admitted he would like to stay at Anfield “forever” and retire as a Liverpool player.
However, as Slot closes in on Kerkez – a player expected to become first choice on the left of defence given the £40m fee – the Dutchman could well be about to crush Robertson’s dream.
The left-back said: “Look, my aim is to finish at Liverpool, and I’d love to finish at Liverpool, but I know how tough it is to keep playing at the highest level. Time will come to make that decision.
“I want to stay here forever and I hope to retire here, but you know if I keep going and I feel fit and I feel healthy, but when you get into your thirties things change. I’d love to retire at this club.”
Robertson has accumulated 342 appearances for Liverpool since his £8m move from Hull City in July 2017 – scoring 11 goals and providing 67 assists – but with only 12 months remaining on his contract and interest from Simeone, he may have already kicked his final ball for the Reds.
How much Atletico Madrid are prepared to pay for Andy Robertson
After almost a decade of admirable service, Liverpool still look set to make a profit on the Scot.
TBR Football understand Atletico Madrid have told Liverpool they are prepared to pay around £20m to sign Robertson this summer, which wouldn’t be bad business by any means given his age and the fact Kerkez is set to arrive for £40m.
With only 12 months left on his contract and an obvious replacement incoming, we feel Liverpool will struggle to get a higher fee from Atletico Madrid.
