Liverpool plotting to test Newcastle United's resolve with bid for Anthony Gordon according to…

· 15 June 2025, 18:30

**Last summer, Newcastle United briefly flirted with the idea of selling winger Anthony Gordon when they were coming up with ways of beating PSR.**

The Magpies needed to plug a financial gap of around £70 million to avoid a possible points deduction for breaching PSR, and one idea floated was to cash in on Anthony Gordon after a fantastic season with Liverpool reportedly keen on the former Everton man.

Almost as quickly as the idea was floated, however, it was shot down as Newcastle knew that selling Gordon would just set them back on their project. Ultimately, Newcastle found another way by selling youngsters Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson.

However, the idea of Gordon moving to Liverpool took on a life of its own and became a huge story in the media, even reportedly affecting Gordon's concentration while away with England for Euro 2024, which saw him hardly used by Gareth Southgate.

Anthony Gordon in action for England

Liverpool are considering a £100m bid for Anthony Gordon

--------------------------------------------------------

A year later, and the rumours have resurfaced with [The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/35410564/liverpool-anthony-gordon-transfer-wirtz-kerkez/) talking up a potential £100 million bid coming in from Liverpool this summer.

Liverpool have just agreed a staggering £116 million deal to bring in Florian Wirtz, and could turn their attention to the boyhood Liverpool with another £100 million bid.

Newcastle had valued Gordon at around £80 million last summer, and despite coming in for a lot of criticism from the Toon Army this season, he still contributed nine goals and seven assists in 42 games for the Magpies.

£100m for Anthony Gordon would be hard to turn down

---------------------------------------------------

While I have called out Anthony Gordon for his poor showings last season, I've been the first to make excuses for the England star and I have every confidence that he'll return to the form he showed in 2023/24 again, and can even get better, I can also see the benefit of cashing in at £100 milllion.

It would have to be a £100 million plus bid to sway me, however. I wouldn't sell him for the £80 million that was quoted last year. But £100 million for someone we paid around £45 million for would be hard to pass up.

Harvey Barnes has proven to be more than up to the task down the left wing, but that £100 million could open so many doors in the transfer market for Newcastle, and we could find a replacement no problem.

However, it's important to remember the origin of this story and the reality that Newcastle want to hold on to all of their stars this summer and are under no pressure to sell.
