Manchester United great Edwin van der Sar has called on Ruben Amorim to give Antony another chance - despite him looking destined to move on.

The Brazil forward was out of Amorim's plans shortly after the Portuguese head coach was appointed. After failing to find a suitable position in their new 3-4-2-1 system, Antony was loaned to Real Betis where he managed to form something of a renaissance in his output.

His nine goals and five assists for the Spanish giants caught the eye - but are unlikely to stop him from being sold. The Manchester Evening News understands the winger is one of the players earmarked to be permanently sold in the summer transfer window.

Despite that, Van der Sar told The Sun before his appearance at this year's Soccer Aid, that the winger, who made his name at Ajax while he was the club's sporting director, should be given a second chance to impress. "They're on the right track," the Netherlands icon insisted.

"‘I think they're signing a more experienced striker, maybe another one on the way.

"The two players they signed in the winter break [Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven] are good, so it should be fine and give the faith to the manager.

"Maybe [Alejandro] Garnacho is going to go. I would say bring Antony back, but I'm not sure if that's realistic."

While claiming that Antony should be given a second chance, Van der Sar also predicted two new additions could be coming to the club this summer. Strikers are likely to be on the transfer shortlist for Amorim this summer.

Sporting CP frontman Viktor Gyokeres has been heavily linked with United, while Victor Osimhen has also been credited with an interest from the Reds. Currently, United's focus is to bring in Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo amid increasing interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
