Edwin van der Sar has urged Ruben Amorim to give Antony another chance at Manchester United. He believes that the Brazilian has shown what he is capable of during his loan at Real Betis.
Speaking at an event covered by GOAL, the legendary goalkeeper claimed that Antony can be the ideal replacement in the squad for Alejandro Garnacho. He understands why the Argentine needs to leave, but doesn't want the Brazilian to go, although he is unsure if the winger will get another chance. He said:
"Luckily, I'm not in a position anymore to dictate at a club which kind of players have to come, but they're on the right track by signing a more experienced striker, maybe with another one on the way. The two players they signed in the winter break were good, so they should be fine if they give faith to the manager. Maybe [Alejandro] Garnacho's going to go, I would say bring Antony back, but I'm not sure if that's realistic."
Antony was loaned to Real Betis in January, and he played a key role in taking them to the UEFA Europa Conference League final. He registered nine goals and five assists in 26 games for the Spanish side. However, they lost the final to Chelsea, and the winger is now back at Manchester United.
Edwin van der Sar wants Andre Onana to stay at Manchester United
Edwin van der Sar has told Manchester United not to waste money on a replacement for Andre Onana. He believes that the goalkeeper is going to get better, and it will be a mistake for them to let him leave.
He said on talkSPORT:
"I’ve known him already for a long time. He spent four or five years at Ajax. I trained with him and saw him coming. He has great strengths. He's athletic. He has good reaction saves. Good with his feet and everything. I'm sure he's going to get over it. Sometimes it's not easy. Sometimes your performances or the pressure there is.
"But I've seen him play for Ajax, for Inter, Champions League finals. I'm sure he's going to be fine for next season. I think there are more areas where United should see if you can have a better player, a different player. But I don't think the goalkeeping situation needs to be addressed now."
Emiliano Martinez has been linked as the replacement for Andre Onana at Manchester United. The Red Devils have opened talks to sign the Aston Villa star this summer.
