Chelsea vs Los Angeles FC Preview: FIFA Club World Cup, Matchday 1, 2025

Enzo Maresca's Chelsea kick off their Club World Cup campaign against Los Angeles FC as the two lock horns in matchday one of the extended competition.

The two sides are part of Group D, which also features the champions of Tunisia, Espérance and Brazilian side Flamengo.

LAFC only recently qualified for the Club World Cup as they defeated Club América in a match that decided who would replace the excluded Club Leon in Group D.

Chelsea will be confident following their positive end of the season, but will need to be wary of LAFC, who have averaged 1.9 goals per game in the MLS so far this season.

Chelsea

The Blues do not have any major doubts ahead of this match as Enzo Maresca has the entirety of his 28-man squad to select from.

Four new signings will be at the disposal of the Italian head coach, none more appealing than Liam Delap, who is Chelsea's latest signing, who they hope will be the regular goalscorer that they desire.

Andrey Santos, who spent last season out on loan, is another who may feature in this game, with the Brazilian likely wanting to show why he should get regular first-team game time this season.

Giving players who have been on duty for their nations may be in the back of Maresca's mind. However, the club have been very vocal about their aims in this competition, indicating that the regulars will be featuring often.

LAFC

Olivier Giroud will likely be starting up top against his former club, where he won the Champions League in 2021, playing an important part in that campaign.

Hugo Lloris will also be another familiar face for Chelsea as the Frenchman is the former keeper of the London outfit's rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.

Odin Holm is the only player expected to miss the first matchday of the competition for the American side, as the Norwegian has been struggling with a leg injury as of late.

Predicted Lineups

Chelsea

Sanchez; James, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; Fernandez, Caicedo; Madueke, Palmer, Jackson; Delap

LAFC

Lloris, Palencia, Segura, Marlon, Hollingshead, Tillman, Jesus, Delgado, Yeboah, Giroud, Bouanga

Key Players

Chelsea: Moises Caicedo

LAFC are very much a counter-attacking team that could cause issues to the Blues if they are not dealt with correctly. However, the energy that Moises Caicedo possesses in every match will inevitably help the Blues nullify their opponents' threat.

Chelsea's player of the season will be a crucial aspect of the entirety of the Blues' run in this competition.

LAFC: Denis Bouanga

LAFC's top scorer in all competitions so far in the 24/25 season will likely be the biggest threat against Chelsea. The attacker has scored 12 goals in 22 appearances ahead of this match, and has also assisted six more.

If the American side wants to cause an upset, there is a high chance that Bouanaga will be involved in this.
