Arsenal prepare for transfer battle with Napoli to sign South American star - report

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Lille defender Alexsandro Ribeiro, according to reports from UOL in Brazil.

The Gunners are working to strengthen their squad ahead of next season, following another second-place Premier League finish.

Mikel Arteta and the club’s recruitment team have already begun exploring options in the market. The goal is to add players who can help them finally lift the title.

Ribeiro, a Brazilian centre-back, has now caught the attention of the Arsenal scouts. He recently earned his first call-up to the Brazilian national team under new manager Carlo Ancelotti.

The 25-year-old featured in a World Cup qualifier against Paraguay. Reports suggest that Arsenal scouts were in attendance to watch him live.

They were impressed with his showing for Brazil, where he looked calm on the ball and strong in duels.

Ribeiro is known for being good in the air and able to play with both feet. His composure under pressure and his reading of the game have also drawn praise.

Ribeiro may be drawn to the chance of joining up with his Brazil team-mate Gabriel Magalhães at Arsenal.

Magalhães also played for Lille before making the move to north London. The experienced defender recently signed a new and improved deal with the Gunners.

His presence at the club could play a part in convincing Ribeiro to make the switch to the Emirates this summer.

Gunners face competition from Napoli.

Arsenal are not alone in the race for the defender. Serie A champions Napoli are also keeping close tabs on Ribeiro.

The Italian side are believed to be long-time admirers of the Brazilian, and may challenge Arsenal for his signature.

Despite interest from other clubs, Arsenal believe they have a solid chance due to their strong project and growing reputation for developing young talent.

Ribeiro played 30 matches for Lille in the 2024/25 Ligue 1 season. He helped the French side keep 13 clean sheets along the way.

He is highly rated by Lille, but the club may be open to selling if the right offer arrives this summer.

If signed, he could emerge as another strong option in Arsenal’s defence. He could also provide important cover across the backline.

The Gunners already boast solid depth in that area, but Arteta believes more quality and competition will be key to taking the next step.

Arsenal are expected to continue watching Ribeiro closely over the coming weeks as the transfer window heats up.
