After helping anchor one of the NFL’s most dominant offensive lines during the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX championship run, the right guard position is once again up for grabs in Philadelphia. But unlike previous seasons, this year’s competition appears to have a clear frontrunner before training camp even begins.
Tyler Steen is expected to enter camp as the favorite at right guard following the offseason departure of Mekhi Becton, who signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. Becton claimed the job from Steen during training camp in 2024 and went on to start all 19 games for the Super Bowl champions. With Becton gone and Cam Jurgens shifting to center to replace Jason Kelce, Steen has taken first-team reps during OTAs and appears to have a head start in reclaiming the role.
Now entering his third season, Steen finds himself in a much different position than a year ago. After spending 2024 as a backup, the former third-round pick has benefited from a full year in Jeff Stoutland’s system and has made strides in his transition from college tackle to NFL guard. The Alabama product has focused on refining the physical and mental aspects of interior line play, adjusting to the demands of hand placement, leverage, and inside angles.
Though he has seen limited game action, Steen’s lone extended appearance came in Week 9 of the 2023 season against the Dallas Cowboys. That performance, which saw him allow six pressures according to Pro Football Focus, became a turning point in his preparation. He has used the experience as motivation to clean up his technique and elevate his readiness.
While Steen is the clear leader, the Eagles have added competition. Kenyon Green, a former first-round pick by the Houston Texans, was acquired in the C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade. Green brings 23 career starts to the table and has mostly lined up at left guard with the second team during OTAs. That alignment behind Landon Dickerson suggests the Eagles view Green more as versatile depth than a primary challenger at right guard.
Veteran Matt Pryor, who started 15 games for the Bears in 2024, also returns to Philadelphia and has been taking second-team reps alongside Green. He provides experience but currently sits behind Steen on the depth chart. Rookie Trevor Keegan, a fifth-round pick out of Michigan, rounds out the group and is expected to be more of a long-term project than an immediate contributor.
The Eagles have faced turnover at right guard since Brandon Brooks’ Pro Bowl run from 2017 to 2019 ended due to injury and retirement. Isaac Seumalo filled the role during the team’s 2022 Super Bowl appearance before his own departure, and while Becton proved to be a solid stopgap in 2024, his time in Philly was always likely to be short-lived.
Now, Steen appears poised to finally step into a starting role the Eagles envisioned when they drafted him. He has the tools, the coaching, and the opportunity. With the franchise focused on continuity and physical dominance in the trenches, Steen’s emergence could provide much-needed long-term stability at a position that has seen too much change in recent years.
