It's not like the Philadelphia Eagles have a desperate need in the secondary.
Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean are two of the top young cornerbacks in the game. Reed Blankenship, Sydney Brown, and second-round rookie Andrew Mukuba make up a tantalizing safety room.
The team could still look to add more, though.
With free agents like cornerback Jaire Alexander and safety Justin Simmons still available, the Eagles are in a position to jump if they want to add another veteran to their defense's back end.
And fans can make this a fun debate.
Both Simmons and Alexander thrived under the coaching of several members of Philadelphia's staff, including defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and defensive backs coach Christian Parker.
If the Eagles were to look to sign one of them, which player would make the most sense for this season?
In the end, the only correct answer is Alexander.
Simmons is 31 years old, while Alexander is only 28. While both players have dealt with injuries over the last few years, Alexander is still on the cusp of his career's prime compared to a player like Simmons.
There's also the reality that Alexander's final season in Green Bay, while marred with injuries, was still an effective one. Simmons struggled mightily with the Atlanta Falcons in 2024. He's trying to find anyone to add him to the roster to save his career.
There's also the very realistic path that Philadelphia simply chooses to avoid both veterans. The Eagles want to get younger on the roster and already have quality starters in roles in the secondary.
If they were to sign either veteran, it could fundamentally stunt the growth of some of their young talent.
So, while Alexander may be the better fit to sign immediately, that doesn't mean it will happen just yet. … and maybe it need not happen at all.
