Watch the crazy scenes as Sam Fender and Newcastle United legend lift Carabao Cup at St James'…

A raucous St James’ Park crowd roared as Sam Fender and Dan Burn lifted the Carabao Cup last night.

Two North East legends united in front of a sea of black and white to send social media into meltdown. Sam Fender wowed the region with 150,000 fans enjoying his hits over three jam-packed days at St James’ Park.

Critics from further afield have mocked the Geordie celebration at Newcastle United’s home where the outfit of choice has been a Toon shirt and bucket hat. But to those from the area, these are worn proudly as the area gets behind one of its own.

And in Dan Burn, Fender might have met his match as the Geordie flying the furthest on cloud nine right now. The Blyth native scored the famous opener at Wembley that sent Newcastle on their way to Carabao Cup success.

Two Geordie icons at St James’ Park

Having arrived as a stop-gap signing, the 33-year-old is now a Toon icon and was argubaly the club’s best player last season. Another Champions League campaign awaits and Burn will have a crucial part to play.

So what better than to combine the two local heroes to bring the curtain down on an anthem-filled weekend? Fender invited Burn - who attended Thursday’s gig - on the stage alongside the Carabao Cup trophy.

They lifted the cup as cheers akin to Wembley’s West Stand on March 16 erupted inside St James’ Park. Burn said on the microphone last night: “This is for my mam, dad, all my pals and all the ones who didn’t make the night.”

Sam Fender on ‘best day ever’

Fender hailed the Wembley win as the “best day ever” following the game in March. His album, People Watching, collaborated with Newcastle during the Carabao Cup won.

Whether indie rock is for you or not, the 31-year-old is now etched into Toon folklore as his name was emblazoned on the jerseys as Newcastle ended the 70-year drought. He posted at the full-time whistle: “Best day ever. We deserved it. 70 years. The clock has been reset. Howay the Lads."

Dan Burn dreaming about Real Madrid and Barcelona

If legendary status was not enough, Burn is now hoping to play against Real Madrid or Barcelona in the Champions League next season. He said last month: “I want to play against the best teams, so I’d love to play against Madrid, Barcelona. That’s why you want to play Champions League football - it’ll be exciting.

“It’ll be good to even see Sunderland getting back to the Premier League. It’s such a weird thing because I’m really excited about it. I shouldn’t be, but those were the games when I was a kid.

“The derby days were the first fixtures I’d look for when they came out, so I wouldn’t say that I’m happy for them coming up, but I am happy that we get the derbies back.”
