Newcastle United signed Chelsea wonderkid with ‘passion’ and ‘confidence’ at young age

Newcastle United star Tino Livramento is one of the Premier League’s most promising defenders.

Premier League and England legend Ashley Cole believes Tino Livramento is developing into a “top player” at Newcastle United.

Eyebrows were raised when the Magpies stumped up £70million to sign the full-back two years ago. Livramento had made just two comeback appearances for Southampton following an ACL injury.

People were quick to forget his potential when breaking through the Chelsea ranks. He won Chelsea academy’s Player of the Year award in 2021 - a feat Lewis Hall achieved two years later.

Ashley Cole on Tino Livramento

Someone who knows all about starring at full-back is former England defender Cole. As Three Lions under-21s assistant, he is also familiar with Livramento’s qualities.

The 44-year-old believes Livramento has the confidence, ability, most importantly manager in Eddie Howe to become an elite performer. Cole told The Northern Echo: "I had the fortune to be around him when he was at Chelsea. He was in the under-21s in the reserve group.

“You always see the passion and level he could get to. But of course, there's only a certain level of information we can give him. It's down to the players to take on that information, absorb it, and want to learn and listen and develop and get better. He's certainly one of them players.”

Eddie Howe also praised

“I think him getting the opportunity at Newcastle and continuing to play first in football gave him the belief, the confidence in his own ability,” Cole added. “And of course, a manager that's trusted him to play at such a young age. He had quite a big challenge going to Newcastle. I think he's developing into a top player.

“Whatever level he wants to get to, he can get to because he's got that personality and desire. I think he's got a beautiful future, a bright future. Long may it continue that he keeps playing for Newcastle, keeps gaining experience and keeps his levels up."

Lee Carsley on Tino Livramento

Livramento - who was man of the match in the under-21s Euros opener against the Czech Republic - also received bold praise from manager Lee Carsley. He said: “He’s a top player, an excellent player. Tino’s had some injuries in the past which have held him back. Without those injuries, I think he’d have been a lot further ahead now than where he is in terms of pushing for a senior position.

“So, he’s highly rated both on and off the pitch. The fact that he can play two or three positions (is a bonus). I remember the first camp I ever had with Tino was an Under-20s one and I might have played him on the right wing.

“He always turns up with so much enthusiasm. We’ve tried to help him as much as we can when he’s here as well, in terms of when things haven’t been going so well for him. We’ve still picked him and still tried to give him game time. He fully deserves to be here, and I expect him to have a massive future with the senior team.”
