West Brom have been named as potential suitors for a defender who would be a shrewd signing for QPR or Millwall.
QPR and Millwall should be looking to storm in on West Brom links with Nottingham Forest defender Harry Toffolo ahead of the 2025/26 season.
The 29-year-old is looking for his next challenge having left The City Ground after three years. Toffolo moved to Forest from Huddersfield Town in 2022 after being defeated by the club in the Championship play-off final.
The defender has gone on to make 57 appearances for Forest and saw his deal extended until the end of the 2024/25 season last year. Toffolo will now leave upon the expiry of his contract this summer. A club statement has confirmed: “Nottingham Forest can confirm that Harry Toffolo will depart the Club upon the expiration of his contract this summer. Since his arrival from Huddersfield Town in 2022, Toffolo has made an invaluable contribution not only on the pitch, but also off it.
Nottingham Forest thank ‘outstanding’ defender
“Last year, the 29-year-old was named as an ambassador for Tricky to Talk – Nottingham Forest Community Trust’s mental health programme – having attended several Tricky Hubs and Bottled Up Blokes sessions, speaking about his own history with mental health whilst actively listening to participants who share similar struggles.
“Toffolo also attended a number of Community Trust’s Soccer Schools visits, helping to inspire the next generation of aspiring footballers, and his off-the-pitch contributions were rightly recognised as he was named the Club’s PFA Community Champion in the 2023/24 season. Toffolo, who made a total of 57 appearances for Forest, produced an outstanding goal-line clearance in Forest’s 2-1 away victory at Tottenham Hotspur in April – a win that proved to be crucial in the Reds’ pursuit of European football for the first time in 30 years. The defender’s first and only goal for the Club came in a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers in December 2023 meant that he has scored in each of England’s top four divisions, outlining his impressive rise up the football pyramid.
“As he embarks on a new chapter, everyone at the Club sends their sincere thanks to Harry for his outstanding contribution to Nottingham Forest and wishes him every success for the future.”
QPR and Millwall should rival West Brom in transfer race
BirminghamWorld has carried reports of West Brom interest in the player and claim that ‘a number of’ British sides are weighing up a move. QPR and Millwall should make sure they are among those suitors.
The R’s are set to see right-back Jimmy Dunne leave as a free agent this summer. The defender has been offered a new deal but is thought to be well courted by Sheffield United. Meanwhile, Millwall were left short in the full-back roles at times last term. What’s more, if the Lions are looking to push for a play-off space next term, adding players with Premier League quality would be a shrewd move.
Toffolo did spend a brief spell at The Den in 2018, signing on a short term deal in the January but leaving at the end of the season without playing a game. He has previously turned out for Rotherham United, Lincoln City and Huddersfield Town.
Not only would Toffolo add Premier League experience to QPR and Millwall, but he would come with bags of Championship knowhow too. He has played 99 times in the second tier and would be an incredibly reliable free signing.
Toffolo is the kind of personality that QPR and Millwall would want too. When first finding his feet at Huddersfield Town, former manager Danny Cowley praised a ‘really good kid’ and ‘down-to-earth, honest, hard-working boy’. The Yorkshire Post carry those full emotive quotes which suggest that the defender would offer so much more than experience on the pitch.
Providing an update on the player’s future, transfer specialist Graeme Bailey said: “He’s an interesting one. I did hear a little bit of a squeak for Celtic, but I don’t think there’s anything in that. I do know Celtic are looking at Josh Doig and I think that one’s progressing, to be fair. As I understand it, there’s been sniffs from West Brom. Quite a few teams in the Championship will be keen, to be fair and I think this is one of those situations where, as he’s on a free, he’s not going to be short of options.
“I don’t think it’s going to be happening this week or any time soon. He does still hope he could get a Premier League chance. It could be that Wolves take a chance on him. Toffolo won’t be in a massive hurry because there’s good interest in him at the top of the Championship. He’s not about to sign with anyone yet, I don’t believe. He’s got good options out there. He’s a very solid player and he’ll get a good club.”
