Barcelona president Joan Laporta is said to be “still reluctant” to try and sign Nico Williams from Athletic Club.
Williams has reportedly made it clear to his agent that his preference this summer is to move to Barcelona rather than Arsenal or Bayern.
Yet Barcelona’s priority still seems to be Luis Diaz, with the club having doubts over trying for Williams for the second summer in a row.
Journalist Santi Ovalle has been chatting about the situation on Carrusel Deportivo and thinks there are several reasons why the Barcelona president is hesitant about the transfer.
“Laporta was reluctant to go for Nico Williams because of everything that happened last summer, because in the end he rejected Barça’s offer because he didn’t see the signings issue clear,” says Ovalle.
“As a matter of pride, the president didn’t see any clear idea of going for Nico Williams again unless he was the one who made the first move and told Barca that he wanted to play there.”
The issue of a potential Club de Amigos is also raised again, with Ovalle adding: “One aspect that Joan Laporta is hesitant about with Nico Williams is that it would be too much cronyism within the locker room. The president wants a more professional relationship within the locker room, rather than one of friendship.”
We’ll have to see what happens next and whether Laporta and Co will try again for Nico or remain focused on the likes of Diaz and Rashford.
