Liverpool are plotting a push to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon in a deal that could reach £100 million, according to Football365’s Lewis Oldham.
The report cites The Sun, which claims the Reds may return for Gordon after initially exploring a move last summer, before the Daily Mail also echoed the reports on Sunday morning.
Gordon, a Liverpool supporter since childhood and a former Everton player, was previously linked with a switch to Anfield when Newcastle needed to raise funds to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
At the time, “a cash-plus-player deal was discussed, with Joe Gomez mentioned as a potential candidate to go in the other direction,” but Newcastle ultimately opted to sell Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson instead of losing one their pillars in Gordon.
Despite penning a long-term contract extension in October, Gordon’s future remains uncertain amid continued interest, and it’s not that crazy to think the steady rumors and links to this or that behemoth club might impact his mentality and frame of mind regarding a potential move out of Tyneside.
The 24-year-old notched six goals and five assists in the league this past season and remains one of Newcastle’s most valuable assets.
Liverpool’s interest has re-emerged as they prepare for possible exits, with Luis Diaz attracting attention from Barcelona. Adding Gordon would deepen the squad for manager Arne Slot, whose side won the Premier League last season and are expected to be aggressive again this summer.
The report adds that Liverpool also inquired about Alexander Isak, but Newcastle’s £150 million valuation made that deal unfeasible financially for the Reds.
Should Gordon leave, Newcastle could try to land Jack Grealish on loan as a potential replacement, with Manchester City open to subsidizing his wages.
