The weekend saw a flurry of chatter that Sweden's hotshot would snub any advances from Manchester United, making Arsenal look like they're in pole position.
However, Record, the well-respected Portuguese paper, dropped the bombshell on Sunday that Arsenal's hefty bid got booted out by Sporting.
Arsenal reportedly lobbed over an offer totalling about €70m (£60m), but Sporting are playing hardball, insisting on the full whack of the player's £85m buyout clause. "Threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me," barked Sporting president Frederico Varandas.
This has supposedly got Arsenal scurrying to find another sharpshooter, with Ollie Watkins' name being thrown into the mix.

The circumstances involving Real Sociedad's Zubimendi seem as clear as mud due to contrasting reports.
Just a fortnight ago, it seemed all sewn up. Then Real Madrid cranked up their media operations, hinting they might swoop in and snatch the deal.
However, it now appears that the La Liga titans are out of the race, paving a clear path for Arsenal to secure one of the most sought-after midfielders for the upcoming season.
