Nottingham Forest have reportedly stepped up their interest in Brentford's in-demand striker Yoane Wissa.
Bolstering their attacking options is a key priority for the Reds this summer. Botafogo’s Igor Jesus has already confirmed he will link up with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side after the Club World Cup, but he might not be the only forward Forest add to their ranks.
Wissa, who scored 19 goals in the Premier League last season, was on the Reds’ radar in January but they were unable to prise him away from the Gtech Community Stadium. A bid, reportedly in the region of £18m to £22m, was rejected by the Bees.
But Forest have retained an interest in the 28-year-old, and they are said to have tried their luck for him again.
Africa Foot claim the Reds “secretly submitted” an offer for Wissa last week and Brentford are “carefully considering” the proposal. The Bees are said to want €30m to €40m (£25m to £34m) for one of their prized assets.
However, Forest are not the only ones with an eye on Wissa. The Guardian claims Thomas Frank is keen to raid his former club and reunite with the front man at Tottenham Hotspur.
Frank left Brentford to take over as Spurs boss last week. The north London club are said to have had “internal discussions” about swooping for Wissa.
According to The Guardian, the Bees are unlikely to let the player go for less than £40m. Wissa’s contract expires in 2026 but the club have an option to extend his deal by a further 12 months.
During the winter transfer window, Wissa addressed the speculation about his future. Asked about Forest’s interest and whether a possible transfer was in progress, he said: “It’s true that there has been interest. They are having a very good season and I too am continuing my momentum. It's true that for the moment I'm focused on Brentford, but we'll see what happens.”
This summer’s transfer window has been split into two due to the Club World Cup. After being closed for a few days, it has now reopened again and teams have until September 1 to get their business done.
