Should Manchester United sell Alejandro Garnacho to Aston Villa? – Opinion

Manchester United wide forward Alejandro Garnacho has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford for a while now, but the links materialised a lot following his interview after he was left on the bench for Europa League finals against Tottenham Hotspur last month. And the whole situation has had many clubs lining up a potential move for his signatures.

Well, if you were to ask me, Garnacho has time and again shown his capacity to feature in the English top tier and especially at the level at which the Manchester Reds want their offensive players to operate, but this falling out with Ruben Amorim has possibly pushed him onto the departure list at Old Trafford.

Many believe that the Argentine has played his last game wearing the United badge.

Villa express interest in his signatures…

While many clubs have expressed interest in his signature, Premier League giants Aston Villa, who are regaining their long-lost heavyweight status under Unai Emery, have also expressed their interest in landing the wide forward. And while many wouldn’t think that the Villans are serious contenders to land the 2004-born winger, the fact that transfer guru Fabrizio Romano recently reported how Garnacho wishes to remain in England and play in the Premier League could hand them a chance.

The thing is, if I look around Premier League clubs at the moment, none of them expect Aston Villa to come through as an ideal destination for the 20-year-old. And while Garnacho has given his preference, we need to see how Monchi enters discussions with the chiefs at Carrington, but this could quite end up playing into the hands of Villa in bringing the Argentinian to Villa Park.

Why are United considering selling Garnacho?

Alejandro Garnacho’s future at Manchester United hangs in the balance as Premier League rivals circle for the young star.

The first thing that Ruben Amorim demands is off-the-ball discipline and then also a sense of vertical combination and tactical unity. And in the Argentine wide forward, he gets someone who is natural yet raw and fares better when put into chaos instead. And if you think individual traits don’t succeed when you are playing positional football.

And then there is the off-the-pitch problem. Let me get this straight: this is not about ego, but it’s about alignment. See, Amorim is building a culture of clarity and accountability at Old Trafford, and Garnacho’s outburst of emotion, like he did after the UEL finals, could end up getting him shipped even if it’s an unpopular decision among the supporters.

Strengths

He will be a high-value sale given his potential, and all the money generated from him would be going into the transfer kitty, which should be commendable given that INEOS look to back Ruben Amorim with marquee arrivals as they look to pair the arrival of Matheus Cunha with someone like Viktor Gyokeres.

Weakness

Selling him to a direct rival means that United are strengthening a side that they would probably be competing for places with in the upcoming seasons, and this could play against them given the high potential that Garnacho has and how he can time and again hand valuable points to Unai Emery’s side.

Yes, this is difficult because it goes against every youth development and club culture instinct given that Garnacho is a Manchester United academy product, and there is no doubt that he has the potential to become world-class, but there are a lot of other facts to consider. Moreover, if cashing in on him can fund a system-suitable centre-forward, it would be great, and if the player himself wants to go, then the chiefs at Carrington must consider it even if it hurts.

So selling him to Aston Villa is a risk, yes, but then perhaps it could also be the most financially and strategically astute move if there are succession plans in place at M16 and if the sale happens for the right price.
