Former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes has warned Bryan Mbeumo about dealing with the 'weight' of the shirt if the forward moves to Old Trafford this summer.

The Reds remain confident of agreeing a deal with Brentford for the Cameroon international, who is also attracting interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News on Monday, it is understood that Mbeumo has his heart set on a move to Old Trafford, and that hasn't changed despite Thomas Frank leaving Brentford to join Spurs last week.

And even after having an opening offer worth a potential £55m rejected by the Bees last week, United are confident of striking a deal with the West London outfit for Mbeumo. If a deal is agreed, he would become United's second signing of the summer after Matheus Cunha joined from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

But ahead of a likely move to Old Trafford this summer, Mbeumo has been warned about the challenges that come with wearing the shirt of the 20-time English champions.

Speaking to BBC Sport, former United midfielder Gomes, who spent more than 15 years at the club before leaving to join Ligue 1 outfit Lille in 2020, opened up on the difficulties of representing a club the size of United.

Asked if some players move to Old Trafford and struggle to deal with the 'weight of the shirt', Gomes said: "I think, naturally, it's a massive step up coming from whichever club you come from to play for Manchester United, and I think the players might have been a bit intimidated by the club and not really know the weight and what it carries, and what it takes.

"But I think ultimately, sometimes it's down to the environment and the timing, the right things in place to help you. I don't think sometimes it's as black and white as they failed or they've not held their own there because of the weight.

"I think now, being older and experiencing a lot of different things, there are a lot of different things that factor into why players go on to succeed and why players go on to struggle."

Since joining Brentford from Troyes in 2019, Mbeumo has scored 70 goals in 242 games in all competitions for the Bees.
