Florian Wirtz could become the most expensive player in the history of British football when he joins Liverpool. And Moises Caicedo, the man who currently holds that accolade, is not fussed to be losing the title though.

The Reds have agreed a deal with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Wirtz for what could eventually be a £116 million fee. Liverpool will pay a guaranteed £100 million for the midfielder, with the remaining £16 million being potentially made up by achievable add-ons.

If those triggers are met then Wirtz will break the record. Caicedo signed for Chelsea two years ago in a deal worth £115 million.

The Ecuadorian is currently away with his team at the Club World Cup. Ahead of their opening game against Los Angeles FC on Monday night, he was asked about Wirtz's arrival on Merseyside.

"I didn't know Liverpool were going to pay that," he said, per Sky Sports News. "It's good (that Wirtz could cost £1 million more than him), it's good."

"Yeah he's a great player. I think everybody watching [can see] how he plays he's a very good player. So I'm happy to hear he's [coming] to the Premier League."

Liverpool were initially in the race to sign Caicedo with Chelsea a couple of years ago and saw a £111 million bid accepted by Brighton & Hove Albion.

The playmaker eventually opted to move to the London club though. After a challenging first season, Caicedo recaptured some form in his second Chelsea term and was named as the team's Player of the Year.

Liverpool missing out on Caicedo eventually opened up an opportunity for Ryan Gravenberch to play as the team's deep-sitting midfielder, a role in which he excelled last season as the team won the Premier League title.

Wirtz will operate in more attacking positions when he arrives. Last season the 22-year-old scored 10 goals and laid on 12 assists in the Bundesliga.
